España Vaciada

It is not a title I invented. It names an ongoing social and territorial phenomenon widely discussed in Spain and deeply rooted in its recent history. The expression itself carries complex political, emotional, and cultural connotations that are difficult to translate directly into English. While it could become Empty Spain, the Spanish word vaciada refers less to a static condition than to an action — something that has been emptied over time.

This project focuses on that process: the gradual depopulation of rural Spain over decades of continuous emigration from inland agricultural regions toward urban centres in search of a different way of living. I travelled through different autonomous communities marked by this history, observing the traces left behind in the landscape, architecture, and social fabric.

I explore the landscape that becomes a visual testimony of migration: territories shaped as much by what remains as by what has disappeared.
